At least 41 Killed after Russian plane Bursts into flames at Moscow Airport

At least 41 people are dead and several unaccounted for after a Russian plane made an emergency landing at Sheremetyevo airport in Moscow. The plane crash-landed and burst into flames shortly thereafter. As per reports, two children and a flight attendant were among the dead.

The jet was carrying 78 passengers and five crew members, however, only 37 have been accounted for so far. Six victims have been admitted in the hospital- three of whom are said to be critical. Aeroflot, Russia's national carrier, has published a list of survivors who have been identified. The list will be updated as soon as new information comes to light.

After the incident, Aeroflot said in a statement that the jet was forced to turn back due to technical problems. Airport officials said that he plane had made several attempts to land and that it caught fire when it made a hard emergency landing.

The aircraft, a Sukhoi Superjet-100, departed from Sheremetyevo airport at 18:02 local time for the city of Murmansk. Shortly after the departure, the crew issued a distress signal due to "malfunctions". After making an emergency landing at the airport runway, the plane's engines caught fire. The crew managed to save some of the passengers who were evacuated in 55 seconds.

An investigation is underway, meanwhile, Russian President Vladimir Putin has been briefed about the incident. He has expressed his condolences to the families of victims.
